Have you ever sensed that disagreeable urge to move your legs especially in the evenings – night time hours or you might have felt some uncomfortable sensations you are encountered which begins after the rest for an extended period of time, for eg: long travelling while sitting in a car or airplane or sitting for prolonged time etc.
You might find an uncontrollable urge to move your legs to boot by reason of an agonising pain which is trolling you like anything. Well this abnormal, unpleasant sensation is actually called as Restless Leg Syndrome which affects majorly legs/feet, usually happens both sides of the body and less commonly affects the arm.
This unconditional sensation is rather sometimes difficult to realise and people often relate their conditions to muscle cramps, tingling, electrical sensation, sensation of bugs under skin, numbness and often name this disquiet state along with clanking in legs as you tossed restlessly in bed with either arthritis or osteoporosis and selflessly medicate themselves with calcium without doctor consultation. But still they didn’t get any relief from their condition.
The cause of Restless Leg Syndrome is a mystery itself with some researchers beliefs that it might cropped up due to a genetic predisposition or due to any environment trigger. While some admit that it might be a consequential effect of an imbalance in the brain chemical “dopamine” which sends message to control the muscle movement. Well it can also occur due to some hormonal changes or sometimes during pregnancy especially during the last trimester while the symptoms eases itself after delivery.
RLS doesn’t lead to any any serious complications but symptoms range from mildly bothersome to severe incapacitating and affects majorly to tribe affected by some already medical conditions like : Diabetes, Alcoholism, Iron Deficiency, Kidney Failure, Spinal cord conditions, High blood pressure etc.
The most serious concern of RLS is that it interferes with the sleep which lead to fatigue and you might be very well aware that sleep deprivation and fatigue both are dangerous for your overall health and general well-being which rather situate an individual at high with additional morbidities: heart disease, depression, insomnia, stroke, early death too.
To my surprise people with Restless Leg Syndrome never seek any medical advice as it affects their day-normal activities and they are often preoccupied with depression, insomnia without knowing the root cause of their problem and adopting the around the world unlike experimental treatments.
Some Do’s and Don’ts to RLS
- Reduce the intake of caffeine, alcohols, tobacco, lot of sugars etc.
- Make a regular sleep and wake-up schedule routine.
- Exercise everyday as some studies concludes that aerobic exercise and lower body resistance training done three times/week can ease the RLS symptoms ( moderation is the key).
- A foot wrap can help in relieving the RLS symptoms.
- Soak in hot bath before bed followed by a gentle massage/stretch leg muscles.
- Cut down the processed foods, packaged foods, sugary canned beverages. Rather opt for whole fibre foods, dark leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, seeds, poultry, seafood, nuts, iron-fortified foods etc.
- Add folate, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D3, potassium, vitamin E , iron rich foods to your diet.
- Remove all digital devices from your room while sleeping. Make sure the room you sleep its window shades/curtains block the light.
